Selsun Blue For Skin Fungus

Selsun Blue the anti-dandruff shampoo can be effective at getting rid of certain forms of skin fungus infections.  It appears to be particularly effective for a condition known as tinea versicolor where the chest, back, upper-arm and trunk can be affected.  This is a common skin infection, particularly in adolescents and young adults living in warm climates.

The condition is caused by the Malassezia family of yeasts (a type of fungus).  These and other yeasts normally reside harmlessly on the skin without causing negative symptoms.  It is not completely understood what causes an outbreak to develop although it is thought that warm and humid environments may contribute. Tinea versicolor has the following symptoms:

  • Uneven spots on the torso that can merge together into larger irregular shapes with a sharp border.  The fungus changes the color of the skin it infects.
  • Affected skin can develop fine scaly flakes
  • The patches tend to be darker than the surrounding skin and have a reddish or pinkish color (but occasionally they appear lighter).
  • The condition can cause itching and irritation, but typically less so than other forms of skin fungus such as athletes foot (tinea pedis) or jock itch (tine cruris).  Read more about the different types of fungus on skin infections.

Selsun Blue For Skin Fungus Treatment

The condition responds well to Selenium Sulfide which is why Selsun Blue shampoo, which contains 1% Selenium Sulfide, can be effective.  The Selenium Sulfide shampoo should be applied to dry skin and washed off after 5-10 minutes on a twice daily basis. As noted by several Selsun Blue reviews, if large areas of the body are affected using the shampoo is more cost effective than using over the counter antifungal creams.

Selsum Blue may not be effective in severe or advanced infections where stronger antifungal treatments may be needed.  It is highly advisable to discuss your condition with a doctor both for a definite diagnosis as well as treatment advice that is pertinent to your specific condition. Ask whether using Selsun shampoo for skin fungus infections makes sense for your individual case.

I am going to bathe my itchy scratchy cattle dog with it. She suffers sometimes with a yeast issue from the grass she rolls in.

    thx Mary!
… one more question, is the Shampoo’s name “…Fungus”??? …or is the word Fungus not really part of the Shampoo’s name? Because I can find the Selsun Blue Shampoo, different kinds, but none with the name “Fungus”….???!!!! :(

  7. Mary Glen says:

Hi DG. That is correct, the word “fungus” is not part of the “Selsun Shampoo” name.

I have had this skin condition on and off for about 30 years. Normal type Selsun shifts it in a few days, I have not used Selsun Blue yet though.
For me once treated It can stay away for several years and then come back. I have noticed it while on holiday in Spain and so bought the equivalent , I think, from a Farmacia.
In Spain it is called Bioselenium and contains 2.5 % Selenium Sulfide, from memory the same as normal type Selsun.

Thanks for the comment FR. It’s useful to hear about the Spanish product. The Selsun Blue we cover here has 1% Selenium Sulfide.
