Not surprising for a site that deals with fungal infections, we have reviewed a number of antifungal creams, lacquers and ointments. Our focus has been primarily on products that are available over the counter and applied topically to affected areas.

Fungal infections treated by topical anti-fungal medications include athletes foot, nail fungus, jock itch, vaginal yeast infections, male yeast infection and ringworm. Note that the terms “ringworm” and “tinea” are sometimes used as a catch all term for all fungal infections that affect the skin, hair and nails. Furthermore, as yeasts are botanically related to fungi, anti-fungal creams are often used to treat topical yeast infections caused by Candida albicans.

Monistat is an antifungal cream for yeast infection. While it has been developed for vaginal infections, men can also use the cream for male yeast infections. The active antifungal agent is Miconazole Nitrate, available in difference concentrations depending on whether the product chosen is the 1, 7 or 10 day treatment.

Although not designed as an antifungal medication, this anti-dandruff shampoo is a popular treatment for a from of skin fungus known as tinea versicolor. The active ingredient is Selenium Sulfide. Using the shampoo for this condition is usually more cost effective than using an otc antifungal cream but may not be as effective for more severe cases of infection.
